These averages don't show how much the snowfall in Wichita differs from year to year.

In December, for instance, one in four years totals over 5.4 inches of snow. Another 25 percent of years receive less than 0.1 inches for the month.

Similarly in January, fresh snowfall in the heaviest years amounts to over 4.2 inches, while the lightest years get less than 0.4 inches.

New snow for February ranges from over five inches in heavy snowfall years to no snow in light years.

When Wichita Has Its First & Last Snowfalls

The first snowfall of winter for Wichita usually arrives in December. Every three or four years it also snows in November. Although uncommon, a dusting of snow can land here in October.

Timing of the season's last snowfall varies a lot from year to year in Wichita. It can stop snowing as early as January or as late as April.

Wichita is normally free of snow every year from May to September.

How Many Snowstorms Wichita Gets

About half the days of snowfall in Wichita amount to just a skiff, leaving less than an inch of fresh snow. Typically on four days a year, new snow totals at least an inch.

Snowstorms of over five inches a day don't occur every year. Major blizzards that dump ten inches or more in one day are not normal here.
