Mt Washington Snowfall Totals & Accumulation Averages
This page pulls together information on when, how much and how often the peak of Mount Washington in New Hampshire has snow.
There are data and descriptions here of how many days it snows and the total amount of snowfall that Mt Washington usually gets. There are also monthly and yearly counts of the days that the mountain top normally has heavy snowstorms and deep snow accumulated on the ground. Plus there's information on when Mt Washington can expect the first and last snowfalls of the season.
The first set of monthly snow totals are averages for 2010 to 2019. All the other numbers are long-term historical averages based on weather data gathered from 1991 to 2020 on Mt Washington, just below the summit at an elevation of 6266 feet (1910 metres).
How Often it Snows on Mt Washington
The next two tables list monthly and yearly totals for amount of snow and how many days it snows at least 0.1 inches (0.25 centimetres).

These averages don't show how much the snowfall at Mt Washington varies from year to year.
In December, for instance, one in four years totals over 56.5 inches of snow. Another 25 percent of years receive less than 36.8 inches for the month.
Similarly in January, fresh snowfall in the heaviest years amounts to over 57.6 inches, while the lightest years get less than 34.2 inches.
New snow for February ranges from over 49.1 inches in heavy snowfall years to under 32.8 inches in light years.
The greatest range occurs in March when years with high amounts of fresh snow get over 62.1 inches, compared with less than 33.7 inches in relatively low-snow years.
When Mt Washington Has Its First & Last Snowfalls
While the summit of Mt Washington is usually clear of snow in July and August, it can and has snowed there every month of the year. The first snowfall of autumn for Mt Washington usually arrives in October or September.
The season's last snowfall typically happens in June, although in some years this month sees no new snow.
How Many Snowstorms Mt Washington Gets
Most days with snowfall on Mt Washington's peak result in at least an inch of fresh snow on the ground. For 31 days a year on average, the amount of new snow totals at three inches or more.
Snowstorms of over five inches a day normally occur 15 times annually. Of these, 3 days are major blizzards that dump ten or more inches of snow in one day. Storms that severe can hit the mountain anytime from October to May.

How Much Snow Normally Accumulates on Mt Washington
Mt Washington's summit has at least an inch of snow on the ground for most of November through April.
Typically, on 62 days a year the snow covering the top of Mt Washington gets to ten or more inches deep. On an average of 16 of those days the snowpack builds up to over 20 inches deep. Ssnow cover can reach 20 inches at Mt Washington anytime from October to April, and most frequently occurs in March.
