Europe's Coldest Cities in Summer

Europe's northernmost city has the continent's coolest summers. No other major city stays anywhere as tepid as Reykjavík, Iceland, where maximum temperatures average a meagre 12.7 degrees Celsius (54.8 degrees Fahrenheit). That's over five degrees Celsius (10 °F) lower than the next coldest city, Leeds.

Here you'll find lists of major European cities with the coldest climates during summer, along with the chilliest five cities by region: Western, Northern, Eastern and Southern Europe. The ratings are based on the averages of daily maximum temperatures for June, July and August.

Along with Leeds, the United Kingdom has several other entries on the list of ten coldest European cities during summer, including Glasgow and Manchester. Other cold spots such as Oslo and Saint Petersburg are scattered across higher latitudes. Despite long summer days when sun shines for 18 hours or more, their temperatures often climb no higher than 21 °C (70 °F).

These weather rankings are for 68 major European cities which include national capitals plus cities with a metropolitan population of over one million people. You can also see the full list of European cities and their monthly temperatures that these ratings are based on.

Summer's Coolest Cities in European Regions

Outside of Iceland, Ireland and the UK, Europe's coolest cities have summer-time high temperatures that average in the low to mid 20s Celsius (68 to 78 °F).

The low temperatures at Southern Europe's coolest city, Andorra la Vella, are due to its mountain setting. Sitting at 1,023 metres (3,356 feet), makes it Europe's loftiest capital. Almost as cool by day and even chillier at night is Sarajevo, another metropolis nestled among mountains.
